Education ProgramQuintette Coal and Bullmoose Mine closed permanently in 2001. This left the community in an extreme economic crisis. Many initiatives were executed over the years to keep the community going. Community Futures Peace Liard was involved in several initiatives to assist the community since the time of the mine closures. One very successful initiative is the creation of the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark. The Global Geopark opened up a very significant tourism destination opportunity that had the potential to create a stable tourism sector that would provide tourist dollars and business opportunities in Tumbler Ridge. Community Futures Peace Liard participated in several ways prior to the designation working closely with the three groups Tumbler Ridge Museum Society, Tumbler Ridge Geopark Society and the Wolverine Nordic Mountain Society. Community Futures collaborated with the three groups and prepared a Master Plan that provided a management plan, business plan, marketing plan and budget to guide the board of directors for the next four years. Community Futures provided expertise in grant writing, business planning, and in-kind financial support. We participated actively on the board of directors. Sue Kenny, General Manager for Community Futures was the president of the board after UNESCO designated the Tumbler Ridge Geopark and stayed on the board until a Geopark Manager was hired.
